Jack was born on June 1, 1926, in Gary, Indiana; was raised in East Chicago, Indiana and graduated in 1944 from Catholic Central High School (now Bishop Noll Institute) in Hammond, Indiana. After graduation, along with many young men of his generation, Jack entered the U.S. Army as part of the nation’s WWII military effort, serving as a Staff Sergeant and Technical Sergeant at Koko Head and Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Upon returning from the war in 1946, Jack continued his education, working full time while obtaining degrees from the University of Notre Dame (B.A.) and the University of Louisville (J.D.). In 1954, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Peiffer, and began his career in private legal practice – a career that spanned nearly 40 years. Jack also served many years as an Administrative Law Judge for the State of Indiana Worker’s Compensation Board; and was a three-time recipient of the State’s prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award.
Jack was a gentle, thoughtful, humble, and generous man who valued honesty and compassion above material gain and personal status. Throughout his long legal career, he quietly provided no – or low – cost legal assistance to many in need. He was a caring father who placed far more emphasis on his children’s core values than on their material successes; and he was a man of faith who subscribed to and modeled the best tenets of his Catholic religion. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.
Jack is survived by his five children, John A. (Susan Huse), Thomas D., Andrew M. (Judy), James G. (Jane), and Rosemary McDonagh Chmura (Michael); his nine grandchildren, Erin, Amy, Nicholas, Adam, Emily, and Andrew McDonagh, and Michael, Max, and Lucy Chmura; and his sister, Georgine Hazel.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lucille; his parents, Thomas and Grace (Kennedy) McDonagh; and his brothers, Reverend Thomas and James McDonagh.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, September 13, 2013, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 606 E. Washington St., Medina. Father John Lee will officiate. Inurnment will follow at 12:30 P.M., at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
