The Alzheimer’s Association will recognize a Rittman family in this years’ Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday.
The Mazzucco family is walking in memory of Joe and Betty Mazzucco, who both died from Alzheimer’s disease.
The family has been participating in the event for the past five years and will participate in the opening ceremony and share their family’s experience with the illness.
“We walk because we want to raise awareness and money,” said Brie Arrowood, Team Mazzucco captain. Arrowood said the team is walking to honor her grandparents and support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“We walk to let others know that there is a support system for them to lean on. It feels good to know that we are helping to make a difference,” she said.
The event will have a new home this year at the Medina Performing Arts Center, 851 Weymouth Road, Medina. In previous years, it was held on Public Square in Medina.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. It’s held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide.
The Alzheimer’s Association said the disease is now the nation’s sixth leading cause of death. An estimated 5.4 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s.
The Greater East Ohio Area Chapter provides education, guidance, referral information and support for the 60,000 people with Alzheimer’s and 250,000 caregivers in the service area.
Those interested in participating in the walk may register online at alz.org or by calling (800) 272-3900. There is no cost to sign up but walkers are encouraged to seek donations from family members, friends, co-workers and others. Those unable to attend may make donations to specifically support the event.
