State bill would ban teens from driving peers

COLUMBUS — A Republican state lawmaker is proposing tough new driving restrictions on Ohio teens, including prohibiting them from transporting even one additional teenager.

State Rep. Rick Perales, of Beavercreek, told The Columbus Dispatch his bill would bring Ohio’s rules closer to the recommendations of safety groups.

Besides banning teen buddies, it would require backseat passengers to wear a seat belt and move up teen-driving curfew from midnight to 10 p.m.

Teens engaged in work and school activities would be exempt from the new night rules.

Caitlyn Pitts, a 15-year-old from Gahanna, said barring teens from traveling together to sports practices or to the movies is “kind of defeating the purpose” of having a license.

Current Ohio law allows 16-year-old drivers to transport one unrelated passenger of any age.

Don’t we have enough rules we can’t enforce. Parents should be making those decisions, not lawmakers.

Understand that many problems exist with teenage drivers – we have a teen driver – but the rules being looked into seem overboard. With schools – like Medina – eliminating busing the simple process of getting to school when a teen can’t drive is difficult in many cases. If teens can’t ride together to go to school, sports practice etc. it will be a problem. For example if every teen has to drive to school alone, exactly where are they going to park and how much more traffic congestion around high schools will there be? Lawmakers need to start worrying about much more important and serious problems like wasteful government spending, lack of funding for education, and overpaid politicians and let parents worry about their teenagers driving habits.
