SHEFFIELD TWP. — The Black River football team attempted one pass Friday. It went for a touchdown for Clearview.
That was enough to keep the Pirates’ grounded.
Black River ran all over the Clippers to the tune of three different backs rushing for more than 100 yards. Led by Andrew Vaughn’s 206, the Pirates won a wild 64-60 shootout in Patriot Athletic Conference cross-division play.
“I’ve been part of blowouts on the winning end, I’ve been part of blow outs on the losing end. I’ve never been a part of a shootout like this,” Vaughn said. “It’s a great thing to be a part of when you come out on top, though.”
As prolific as Black River (3-2, 2-0) was on the ground, Clearview (2-3, 0-2) matched it through the air. Roger Engle threw for a Lorain County-record 517 yards and six touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a defense that could not stop the run.
“Offensively, we were doing well,” Engle said. “We were putting up points and moving the ball down the field, but it’s still a loss.”
Vaughn was not alone, as fellow running backs Colin Filak and David Bell had monster nights. Filak rushed for 162 yards on 22 carries, while Bell amounted 123 on 20. The Pirates collectively ran for 516 yards, with Vaughn carrying 18 times.
“Our offensive line is where it starts. They did a great job blocking for us,” Bell said. “Our backs hit the hole hard and we did everything we could to get some yards.”
Black River’s defense couldn’t stop Engle or his two athletic receivers. Every time the Clippers needed a big play, they turned to Lance Billings, who accounted for six catches and 203 yards. Gerrell Williams led the team in catches with 10 and piled up 175 yards.
“Defensively, we were absolutely atrocious,” Pirates coach Al Young said. “Tackling is what really bothers me. Getting beat is one thing. They have great receivers so take nothing away from them, but our tackling is atrocious. That’s got to be addressed full throttle on Monday.”
The defense did come up big one time, when it stopped Clearview on fourth-and-6 with just over 5 minutes to play. The Pirates took over on the Clearview 24 and Vaughn scored from 14 yards out six plays later to give Black River a 12-point lead.
The Clippers put together a strong two-minute drill that ended with Engle finding Williams for an 11-yard touchdown plus a two-point conversion that pulled Clearview within four with 51 seconds left. Black River stopped the rally when it recovered the onside kick.
“We missed I don’t know how many tackles out here,” Vaughn said. “It’s just the little things like communication. Guys are not in their spots. We need to get back on the drawing board on Monday, that’s for sure.”
High snaps killed three promising Clearview drives, including a series where the Clippers started on the Black River 35 and wound up punting from their own 24. Penalties plagued the Clippers, too, as they were flagged 12 times for 80 yards.
“It was silly stuff,” Clearview coach Mike Collier said. “Hands getting on the facemask, things like that. They do add up and obviously they are costly.”
