Carole Ann Deland Putkonen, 67, passed away Friday, October 17, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Carole was born December 27, 1945 to the late Melvin and Darlene (Nienhauser) Deland.
She and her husband, Martti, have owned and operated the Avon Animal & Bird Hospital since 1973. Not only was Carole a breeder of champion Trakehners, she was also a member of the Board of Directors for the American Trakehner Association. She was a previous breeder of Arabian horses, some of which went on to win national awards. For three years in a row, she owned the American Horse Show Association Adult Amateur horse of the year distinction and one year she won the World Champion Hunter Rider Adult Amateur Reserve Championship. Her knowledge and passion for horses will be missed by many across the country.
Carole loved to read and had a great passion for art and culture. She had a relentless drive to maintain the integrity of family heirlooms, artwork and nostalgia. She skinny dipped any chance she could, especially on family vacations to Crystal Lake, Michigan. She felt the angels in her hair when she would go to the barn to feed her horses. Carole encouraged her children to become whatever they wanted to be in life and they did just that.
She was a true epicurean, as well, always seeking out exotic ingredients and experimenting with her family. She enjoyed a well made coconut cake and just may have had the most well stocked pantry this side of the Mississippi.
She was a champion marksmen and at one time was 17th in the nation. She shot, she rode, and she cooked.
She was the beloved wife of 45 years to Martti A. Putkonen; loving mother of Lena Winkler (Jim Bihari), Lesa Holford (Andrew) and Sarah Aspromatis (Erol); devoted grandmother of Clare, Marja, Hugo, Lilja, Veikko, Ava, Mina, Elsa and Lucas. Carole is also survived by her faithful companions, Edith Piaf and Phats Domino.
Family will receive friends Monday, October 21, 2013, from 5 until 8 P.M., at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Another Chance Equine Rescue, 17332 Avon Belden Road, Grafton, OH 44044.
