Driver dies in I-71 crash Friday

WESTFIELD TWP. — A 58-year-old Cleveland man died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 about a mile north of the interchange with state Route 83.

The crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. Friday when a 2000 Chevy Malibu, driven by David A. Knight, 58, drifted off the right side the highway while travelling south, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Knight hit a 2002 Ford Explorer that had been stopped on the shoulder.

Kimberly A. Johnson, 54, of Middleburg Heights, and her grandchildren, Cole and Evan Clark of Brook Park, were inside the Ford Explorer. They were taken to Lodi Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Knight was also taken to Lodi Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The Westfield Fire Department and the Seville Emergency Medical Service also responded to the crash.

The southbound lanes were closed for about two hours.
