Red-hot Clyde rolls

Buckeye's Nathan Scott looks for running room behind the block of Cody Fortner on Clyde's Eric Wiseman in the first quarter.

CLYDE — It wasn’t over before it started, but it was pretty close.

Second-seeded Clyde was all over seventh-seeded Buckeye from the start in a 62-14 romp in a first-round Division III, Region 8 playoff game Friday.

The Fliers (10-1) scored on their first 10 possessions and dominated from the get-go.

Things went downhill fast for the Bucks (6-5). After receiving the opening kickoff, Buckeye ran one play and quarterback Christian Petek fumbled the snap.

Clayton Farrar came out of the pile with the ball and the Clyde offense took the field.

A 26-yard touchdown pass from Tim Hoppe (11-of-14 passing, 229 yards, 4 TDs) to Derek Gray (4 receptions, 123 yards, 2 TDs) on Clyde’s second play from scrimmage made it 7-0 just 54 seconds into the game.

The strikes came fast and furious from the Fliers as the lead ballooned to 52-0 at the half.

“We wanted to come out and get off to a good start,” Clyde coach Ryan Carter said. “I thought our kids did that.

“They were giving us some pass looks and I thought our quarterback and our skill guys really took advantage of that.”

Nothing the Bucks did went right and nothing the Fliers did went wrong.

Buckeye turned the ball over three times on fumbles in the first half and once on downs after going for it on fourth-and-2 on its second possession.

“Turnover were pretty tough,” Buckeye coach Mark Pinzone said. “Obviously when you have something like that and you have four or five turnovers — I lost count after a while — in the first half, things happen. When those things happen you really get your backs against the corner. We know that and that’s exactly what happened.”

Clyde’s quick-snap, high-tempo offense was something the Bucks couldn’t get used to as the Fliers rushed to the line after every play to run another.

“They are a team that moves the ball,” Pinzone said. “We’d like to get to that point. … We just didn’t have the guys to do that this year. We had to teach the kids what we were doing and hope to get to that point ourselves.”

The fact the Bucks offense couldn’t stay on the field certainly didn’t help. Buckeye had just one drive of more than three plays in the first two quarters and that was the turnover on downs on its second possession.

Hoppe’s precision passing and the running of Damien Coburn (13 carries, 173 yards, 3 TDs) were just too much for the Buckeye defense.

“We had a great game plan and we took what they gave us,” Hoppe said. “We’ve got lots of guys at every position and everybody can make plays. When our line does the job, we get it done.”

All three of the senior quarterback’s incompletions came on drops by wide-open receivers.

The Fliers moved the ball at will and completely dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“Everybody was just executing right,” Coburn said. “We were doing everything to the best of our ability and it was some of our guys’ last home game ever, so we just played hard. We wanted another game.”

Things were coming so easily for Clyde that when the first-team offense took the field to start the third quarter, a simple run up the middle to chew up clock turned into a 73-yard touchdown run for Coburn.

Carter then sent in the backups to run out the clock.

Buckeye had a single first down in the first half on a 14-yard run by Cody Fortney and didn’t cross midfield until the third quarter.

Fortney (15 carries, 35 yards, 2 TDs) punched in a pair of short touchdown runs, one late in the third quarter and one early in the fourth, to close the scoring.
