Buses to shuttle Candlelight Walkers

Sponsors of Medina’s signature Candlelight Walk think they’ve come up with a solution to clogged parking lots and congested downtown streets during the 22nd annual event Nov. 23.

Two shuttle buses will make continuous trips 4 to 9 p.m. from the northwest side parking lot of Medina High School, 777 E. Union St., to the Medina County Administration Building, 144 N. Broadway St., near the northeast corner of Public Square.

Another set of shuttle buses will make loops 5 to 9 p.m. around the historic district to Root Candles, 623 W. Liberty St., with stops at Miss Molly’s Tea Room, This-N-That Antiques, the Medina County Historical Society and the Coffee Colony.

Matt Wiederhold, executive director of Main Street Medina, said the idea of the shuttle buses was a late addition to last year’s Candlelight Walk.

“We added the parking buses from the high school at the very last minute, like two days before,” he said.

“A lot of people didn’t know about it.”

The 2012 Candlelight Walk drew up to 10,000 people during the Holiday Parade of Lights and fireworks, a record, according to organizers.

Last year was also the first time the nonprofit Main Street Medina raised funding for the fireworks display above the Medina County Courthouse. Once again, fireworks will be set off from the top level of the parking deck behind the courthouse.

But the fireworks mean the parking lot behind the courthouse will be closed, along with the top floor of the parking deck, resulting in fewer parking spaces downtown.

Wiederhold said he hopes the shuttle buses will help solve downtown parking headaches.

“It will make it a lot easier for people,” he said.

This year, City Council approved $16,500 for more holiday lighting throughout the historic district after spending $43,500 last year on lights for Public Square.
