Fire contained at renovated Seville house

SEVILLE — Seville-Guilford Fire and EMS contained a fire at a vacant house to a single room Wednesday night.

The fire call came in at 8:19 p.m. and crews arrived at 147 Center St. within two minutes, according to a news release.

The fire was contained to a single upstairs bedroom and the roof above it. There were no injuries.

“They did a fantastic job of stopping the fire and minimizing damage to the rest of the structure. Without the quick knockdown, the fire could have taken the entire roof off the house,” Fire Chief Jerry Winkler said.

Capt. Gary Henry said owners Tom and Alva Leigh Lawson, of Spencer, bought the house at an auction and are in the process of renovating it.

In the news release, the Medina County Fire Investigation Taskforce said the fire was caused by torches used to heat a thermo-bonding agent for roof repairs and flashing around the chimney.

Westfield Fire and Rescue, Sterling Fire District, Canaan Township Fire Department and Central Fire District provided mutual aid.

A damage estimate was not available Thursday.
