Police seek Kmart jewelry thief

BRUNSWICK — Police are asking for help in identifying a man who walked away with $26,509 worth of jewelry from the Kmart on Center Road last week.

According to a police report, the man took an entire display case of jewelry that was sitting on top of a counter, put it in a shopping cart and covered the case with his coat before running out of the store at 7:35 p.m. on Nov. 25.

Police said a surveillance tape shows the suspect walking through a number of departments of the store, including the jewelry department, before returning to the jewelry department and placing the display case into his cart and cutting the cord attaching it to the counter.

A customer-service employee saw the man running out of the store and tried to stop him, the report said. The man allegedly kept on running and yelled back at the employee, “I didn’t steal anything.”

When police arrived, they spoke with a customer in the parking lot who reported seeing a man with a jewelry case in a shopping cart unloading the case into a car.

According to Sgt. Sam Millam, a customer-service employee described the man as white, between 28 and 35 years of age, with facial hair. Surveillance video shows the suspect wearing a white, hooded sweatshirt, a baseball hat and gloves.

Millam said anyone with information on the theft should contact the department at (330) 225-9111.
