Elyria resident, 20, convicted of abusing infant

MEDINA — A 20-year-old Elyria man faces up to eight years in prison after being convicted of abusing and neglecting his infant child.

Christian Vanmeter

Christian A. Vanmeter pleaded guilty last week to a charge of second-degree felonious assault. An additional charge of child endangering, a third-degree felony, was dropped in exchange for his plea.

Vanmeter, who’s represented by Akron attorney Cara Ford, had been scheduled for trial Dec. 2.

Medina County Common Pleas Judge Christopher J. Collier will sentence Vanmeter on Jan. 6.

Vanmeter assaulted his 3½-month-old child in late June, according to county sheriff’s deputies.

An investigation began after a hospital reported the child’s injuries as suspicious in early July. The child was staying at the hospital.

Vanmeter awaits his sentencing hearing free on a signature bond. As part of his bond, he’s required to submit to regular drug testing.
