Accused arsonist dies, was charged with burning down own home

MEDINA — A 55-year-old accused arsonist died earlier this month at Medina Hospital after being stricken with chest pains while an inmate at the Medina County Jail.

He was taken to the hospital Dec. 6 after “complaints of chest pain and shortness of breath,” according to sheriff’s records.

Buck was set to stand trial Monday on charges that he burned down his own home Dec. 15, 2012. He was arrested in June after a grand jury indicted him on a charge of aggravated arson, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 11 years in prison.

Buck was injured and his dog died in the fire, which was reported by a neighbor.

Lafayette Township Fire Chief Jeff Hall said Buck lived alone in the home.

The fire gutted the house and collapsed the roof. Hall estimated the damage at $200,000.

Buck was being held at the jail on $100,000 bond.
