Joseph W. White, Jr.

Joseph W. White, Jr., 72, of Akron, transitioned to be with the Lord on Monday, February 17, 2014. Joseph was born to the union of Joseph W. White, Sr. and Ethel White on April 4, 1941, in Welch, West Virginia.

Joe retired in 2004 as Executive Director from Summit County Children Services, after 20 years. Post retirement, Joe formed the White Enterprise Group, LLC and provided his expertise to a number of public and private agencies. Joe was also an instructor of social work and child welfare courses at the University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Youngstown State University, and Case Western Reserve University. He served on a number of national, state, and local professional boards, as well as serving on the Commission for the Council on Accreditation for Child Welfare. Joe was a family man as well as a pillar in the community. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his outstanding achievements in the child welfare arena. He received his B.A. Degree in political science and history from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and his Master’s Degree in social work from the University of Illinois-Jane Addams School of Social Work. He created and founded the Rachel White Scholarship Foundation to assist up and coming social workers and teachers. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alfa Fraternity, National Association of Social Workers, and the Black Administrators in Child Welfare.

Joe leaves his loving wife, Cecelia Huffman-White, of seven years. During their time together, they traveled around the world and enjoyed a wonderful personal and professional relationship. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, (Rachel), of 35 years. Into their union were born: Michael White, Joseph White III, (Melissa); and daughter, Michele (Antuane) White- Hammond. Joe was a proud grandfather known as “Granddad” to five grandchildren, Matthew White, Nathanael and Myah Hammond, and Christopher and Rachel White.

He leaves behind a commendable legacy and was one who exemplified a man with great integrity. Relatives who will cherish his memory are two brothers, Archie (Dorothy) White and Duane White; sister, Mona Atley; uncle, Brodie (Eunice) White; four stepchildren; and a host of stepgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Arlington Church of God, 539 S. Arlington Street Akron, 44306, Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 12 P.M. Visitation will be held at 10 A.M., with Reverend Dr. Diana Swoope officiating.
