Find out if you’re owed money

The state of Ohio is anxious to reunite Medina County residents with their forgotten money.

Ohio Department of Commerce Director Andre T. Porter is urging readers to check for their names in the 2014 Unclaimed Funds listing in a special advertising section in Tuesday’s Gazette.

“Check the Medina County list to see if you, your family or your friends have unclaimed funds,” Porter said. “This money can help Ohioans buy a tank of gas, pay off some bills, make a needed home repair or even expand a business which means jobs for Ohioans.”

Unclaimed funds are money or the rights to money that have been dormant or forgotten. Some common examples include: dormant checking and savings accounts, forgotten rent and utility deposits, uncashed checks, undelivered stock certificates, and uncashed insurance policies.

In Fiscal Year 2013, the Unclaimed Funds Division paid 53,580 claims worth approximately $69.2 million. The average claim was for $1,292.

The listing in Tuesday’s Gazette will include 2,509 unclaimed funds accounts worth $1,223,039.93.

The unclaimed accounts, each worth at least $50, were turned over to the Unclaimed Funds Division within the past year for individuals whose last known address was in Medina County.

Counting older accounts, the Unclaimed Funds Division reports a total of 53,033 Medina County accounts, valued at more than $5.5 million.

Complete information about the unclaimed funds accounts is available on the Department of Commerce’s Online Treasure Hunt website, www.unclaimedfundstreasurehunt.ohio.gov, along with forms for individuals and organizations to use in claiming their money.

Help for individuals without Internet access is available locally through the Medina County Treasurer John Burke’s office. The treasurer’s Unclaimed Funds booth will be at the Medina County Fair and periodically at local libraries, grocery stores and drug stores throughout the year.

For more information, call (330) 725-9199 or visit the treasurer’s website, www.medinacountytreasurer.com.

Residents also can write to the Division of Unclaimed Funds and provide the full names to be researched, along with the counties in which the person might have resided.

The division’s address is 77 S. High St., 20th Floor, Columbus, OH 43215.

Anyone with questions about unclaimed funds can call the Division toll free at 1-877-644-6823 (OHIO UCF).
