Lagerheads to move to new space to expand production, add tasting room

Lagerheads, Medina County’s only craft-beer maker, plans to move to larger quarters in the city of Medina this fall.

Lagerheads began brewing beer in June 2010 at its BBQ Smokehouse restaurant, 2832 Abbeyville Road, in York Township.

Co-owner Jon Kiene said the beer will continue to be featured at the restaurant, which will remain open. But production will move to a vacant building at 325 W. Smith Street — about three blocks from Medina’s historic Public Square.

Kiene said the brewery has outgrown the Abbeyville Road facility, and the new location is ideal.

“It’s just a good fit,” he said. “It has the ceiling requirements we need and the power we need, and the location, right off the Square.”

Kiene said the new brewery will include a tasting room — a growing trend among craft-beer makers. In Akron, both Thirsty Dog and Hoppin’ Frog have tasting rooms.

He said the brewery will be up and running by fall if all goes as planned.

Kiene thanked city officials for helping get a required zoning change approved. The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals voted Thursday to approve the change.

“The city involvement has been a great help,” he said. “We appreciate the zoning change and we’re looking forward to being in Medina.”
