Donald Frederick Maatz, Sr.

Maatz_DonaldDonald Frederick Maatz, Sr. was born October 12, 1928, in Berea, and passed away peacefully Thursday, March 27, 2014. He was the beloved son of the late Arthur W. Maatz and Elizabeth Klink Maatz.

He was raised on his beloved family dairy farm in Strongsville, where part of the farm backed up to the “old” Strongsville Airport. Besides working on family farm, Don worked at his Dad’s greenhouse, The Orchard Hill Greenhouse, in Columbia Station. Don was very active as a 4-H club advisor and was awarded an Ohio State University scholarship to the College of Agriculture. Don graduated from Strongsville High in 1946. After his brother returned from military service, he began his studies at Ohio State. After college, Don began his career with United Airlines in Cleveland. In 1964, he moved to Hinckley, where he served as Hinckley Township Trustee, Medina City Chairman and two terms as President of Hinckley Chamber of Commerce. He created the non-profit Hinckley Township Sesquicentennial Corp., for the Township’s 150th birthday in 1975, and served as chairman for the three day event. In 1987, he joined the Strongsville Historical Society and served as trustee for six years and served on the Old Strongsville Town Hall Restoration Committee. He enjoyed being a docent in the Strongsville Historical Village where he’d tell stories of “old” Strongsville. He found the Society very interesting and a challenge as well. His early years, growing up in Strongsville on the farm, were very dear to his heart. In 1938, Don and his wife, Betty Lou moved to Medina, where he served on Medina County Boards for a period of 20 years. He really enjoyed public service. He was an active member of the Medina United Church of Christ, Congregational. Don retired from United Air Lines after 25 years.

Don was the beloved husband of Betty Lou (Parsons); dear father of Donald F. Maatz, Jr., (Grosse Ile, Michigan), Elizabeth Ann Cahill (Steve) (Atlanta, Georgia), Lisa (Washington, D.C.), Marci Jeanne (Shoreline, Washington), and Stuart (Sarasota, Florida); and loving brother of Maynard (Dottie) (Palm Harbor, Florida), and Carole (Strongsville). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 A.M., Monday, March 31, 2014, at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 217 E. Liberty Street, Medina. Reverend Dr. Neal Sadler will officiate and burial will be held at Strongsville Cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday, March 30, 2014, from 3 until 5 P.M., at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in Don’s memory, to the Medina United Church of Christ Congregational, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, 408 9th St. SW, Canton 44707, or Hospice of Medina County, for their loving help and assistance in his final days.
