Karen Lee Hirt (nee Vogely), 65, died of a heart attack and complications from multiple sclerosis on Monday, February 3, 2014 at Regency Hospital of Akron in Barberton.
She had resided since 2009 at Emeritus at Camelot Place in Medina and periodically since 2012 at Wadsworth Pointe Assisted Living Facility. Prior to that, she was a longtime resident of Valley City. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Anderson High School in Cincinnati and later from Ohio State University. She worked for many years in the family business, Hirt’s Greenhouse, and was a member and president of the Buckeye School Board. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1996.
Survivors include her mother, Leah Koehler Vogely of Livingston, Texas; daughter, Jen Hirt and her partner, Paul Cockeram of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; son, Matthew Hirt of Wadsworth; sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Anita Jones Vogely and Dana Jones of Binghamton, New York; brother, and sister-in-law, Emil H. Vogely III and Judy Jensen Vogely of Austin, Texas; and sister and brother-in-law, Martha Jill Vogely and John McMurray of Mt. Solon, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her father, Emil H. Vogely Jr., in 2012.
Her body was donated to the Cleveland Clinic and their Mellon Center for Multiple Sclerosis, where it was studied in February and March 2014. She was cremated in late March 2014, and there will be a private family memorial service in Livingston, Texas. Ohio friends may attend the Cleveland Clinic’s Body Donation Annual Memorial Service on May 15, 2014 at 3 P.M. at the Cleveland Clinic main campus.
