Myrtle A. Schuehrer, 90, of Drummond Island, Michigan, died Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Hospice House of the E.U.P. in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was born January 1, 1924, in Elyria in Lorain County, to Emil and Cassie (Worcester) Smith.
Myrtle grew up in Ohio along with her 14 siblings. She graduated from Eaton High School and attended Elyria Business College. She married John Schuehrer on February 9, 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. They made their home in Ohio until 1962, when they moved to Drummond Island. They built and Myrtle operated the resort, Birch Tree Cabins for 15 years. She also enjoyed working on the Election Board for many years.
Myrtle attended the Lighthouse Christian Church. She was an avid reader who read the newspaper daily and was always knowledgeable about current events. Myrtle also enjoyed gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She loved to make tomato juice from her home grown tomatoes, canning other vegetables, and making jelly.
Myrtle is survived by two sons, Daryl (Darla) Schuehrer and David Lee (fiancee Ruth Wise) Schuehrer, both of Drummond Island; three daughters, Sandra Allen of Holt, Michigan, June (Jim) McHenry of Franklin, Tennessee, and Barbara (John Easthope) Warner of Harrison Township, Michigan; 13 grandchildren, Dawn, John, Heather, Wendy, Wayne, Lisa, Charlie, Sarah, Jacob, Jessica, Jacqueline, Justin, and Carl; 13 great-grandchildren, Eddie, Tommy, Joe, Cody, Anthony, Smith, Devin, Jeremy, Hans, Morgan, Lauren, Lily, and Meade; and four great- great-grandchildren, Damien, Chase, Daphne, and Delilah.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, John Schuehrer; and son-in-law, Jim Allen.
Services will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Lighthouse Christian Church on Drummond Island. Visitation will be held from 12 Noon until 1 P.M., with the Funeral Service to begin at 1 P.M. Burial will follow the service in Drummond Island Cemetery.
