MONTROSE — Cloverleaf freshman Austin Hanna won an intracounty boys tennis showdown Saturday at the Medina Division I Sectional.
No. 3 seed Hanna defeated Medina junior Connor Varney 6-1, 6-3 in the third-place singles match at Springside Racquet Club.
One day earlier, both players locked up their spots at the Oberlin College District, but had to complete their sectional brackets for seeding purposes.
The 16-man district tournament begins Thursday. In order to advance to the state tournament, Hanna and Varney must win their first match and one of their next two contests to grab one of the six bids.
In the semifinals, No. 1 seed Aaron Sandberg of Walsh Jesuit topped Varney 6-0, 6-0 for his fourth straight blanking to open the tourney, while No. 2 seed Noah Hendrickson of Revere beat Hanna 6-2, 7-5.
Defending state runner-up Sandberg subsequently routed Hendrickson 6-1, 6-2 in the sectional championship. Varney is the lone unseeded player among the four district qualifiers from the site.
The doubles final saw both Copley entrants in the field square off. No. 1 seeds Andrew Ong and Gavin Aten routed No. 3 seeds Nick and Matt Adzema 6-0, 6-0 for the crown.
Walsh Jesuit’s Gaven Cona and Ben Smith, who were unseeded, beat No. 4 seeds Matt Harris and Bharat Kumar of Revere 7-6, 6-4 in the third-place match.
Harris and Kumar edged Highland’s Michael Hutchings and Vince Luth in the quarterfinals, while the Adzemas eliminated Brunswick’s Ian Kurela and Roger Boyer, leaving the county duos one win short of reaching districts.
