Local eateries to hold benefits for two fathers who died this month

MEDINA — Two area restaurants will hold benefit specials that will aid the families of two fathers who died earlier this month.

On June 17, the Medina and Brunswick Marco’s Pizza shops will donate 15 percent of all sales in honor of Medina School’s teacher Dan Sherman, 36, of Montville Township, who died last week while he was working out.

On June 19, all Northeast Ohio Bob Evans locations will donate 15 percent of sales to the Peter Radke Fund.

Radke, 43, of Medina Township, gave his life attempting to save a young girl from choppy waters in Lake Erie on May 31.

Sherman was a fifth-grade teacher at Waite Elementary School as well as a coach for Medina High School’s baseball and football teams.

About 850 people attended a memorial service in honor of Sherman on Tuesday at the Medina Performing Arts Center.

“It’s hard to put into words what Dan did for the district because he did so much,” Medina City Teachers Association President John Leatherman said. “Our office has come to a grinding halt since we heard the news.”

Radke was the father of four and a devout Christian.

He worked as an interactive media specialist for the Akron-based marketing firm Hitchcock Fleming & Associates Inc.

To make a donation to the fund for Radke, Bob Evans customers must present a flyer, which can be found on the Gazette’s Facebook page.
