Medina water bills going up 5 percent starting in August

Medina residents will see a 5 percent hike in their water bills beginning Aug. 1.

The higher water rates are the result of several increases requested by Avon Lake Municipal Utilities, which supplies the city with water.

City officials said there are several unanticipated capital improvements that the water fund cannot sustain, resulting in the rate increase to maintain operations and service levels.

The city contracted for water with Avon Lake, which draws from Lake Erie, in 2002 after it was estimated that repairs to the city’s Lake Medina water treatment facility on Granger Road in Medina Township would cost nearly $20 million.
