William “Bill” E. Kovalchik

OBIT FLAGWilliam “Bill” E. Kovalchik, 86, a longtime resident of Medina, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Life Care Center. Bill was born February 17, 1928, Kovalchik_Williamto the late George and Mary (Hosko) Kovalchik, on a small farm near Pleasant City, Ohio. He went to Cleveland and at a young age moved to Medina County near Valley City.

He graduated from Liverpool School in 1946 and Kent State University in 1952, with a degree in education. Bill also received a Master’s Degree in Education and a Doctorate Degree in Education from Akron University while teaching. Bill returned to Valley City to Liverpool School to teach and remained in the Buckeye School System. He taught at the Buckeye Junior High School, and coached both JV and Varsity basketball. Bill also was the principal of the Junior High School and the Litchfield Elementary School. After retirement in 1984, he was a Property Manager for Old Phoenix National Bank. Bill always enjoyed sports, he formerly played fast pitch softball on the Abbeyville Team. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Medina Rotary Club where he was president from 1980-1981. Bill was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award and the A.Z. Baker Service Award for Outstanding Leadership. Bill served his country proudly in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War.

William is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann (Grauel); dear sons, Dale, Brent (Juliet) and Thad (Cinthia); loving grandchildren, Jackson, Paige and Sam; brother, Carl; sisters, Elaine Henry and Rosemary (Fred) Reutter; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 A.M., Friday, June 20, 2014 at Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina. Dr. David Tennant will officiate followed by burial at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Brunswick. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M., Thursday, June 19, 2014 in the funeral home.

Family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Medina United Methodist Church, 4747 Foote Road, Medina, OH 44256.
