Helen Mantz, 100, of Spencer, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at her home. She was born February 14, 1914 in Cleveland, to Edward and Bertha Kannenberg.
Her family moved to North Eaton, where she grew up and graduated from school in 1932.
She married Edgar Mantz on September 28, 1935. They resided in Toledo and later Cleveland, before moving to Spencer in 1941. They farmed and operated Mantz Dairy, delivering milk to Spencer, Chatham and Litchfield.
Helen decided to go to college in 1957 to become a teacher. She traveled to Elyria to take teaching courses through Kent State. She started substitute teaching, and in 1964, earned her Education Degree from Kent State. She taught for the Black River School District, until retiring in 1982. She loved to cook and bake and share those things with her family.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Sandra) Mantz of Reva, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Carol Mantz of Spencer; grandchildren, Paul (Robin) Mantz, Debra (Todd) Smith, Todd (Cindy) Mantz, Bradley (Krista Kish) Mantz, Anne-Marie Lawhorn, Elizabeth Mantz; step-grandchildren, Brad (Sharon) Massie, Carla Massie; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1955; brother, Bob in 1978; sister, Mildred in 1989; husband, Edgar in March of 1998; her 103 year old mother in August of 1998 and her son Loren, (Lonnie) in 2013.
Funeral service will be held Monday, June 23, 2014, at 10:30 A.M., at the Parker & Son Funeral Home, 202 East Main St., Spencer (330-648-2180). Pastor Lenore Robinson will officiate. Burial will follow at Spencer Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, June 22, 2014, from 6 until 8 P.M., at the funeral home.
