Auditor warns of telephone scam that’s tricked Medina County residents

MEDINA — Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack is warning residents to be on guard against a telephone hoax from a person identifying himself as a representative of “Department of the Treasurer, Legal Affairs.”

The caller warns residents they have a lien on their property and asks if they have a criminal attorney. The caller then requests the resident send him money to prevent a police action.

“This is a fraud that has been perpetrated in other parts of the country,” Kovack said. “But it’s the first time we’ve seen it here.”

Kovack said homeowners said the caller spoke in broken English and put them on hold for long periods to respond to questions.

Residents should not provide any personal information over the phone and never make arrangements to send money to a caller like this.

Residents who receive a call should contact their local law enforcement agency, he said.
