Township firefighter extradited from Texas in teen sex case

MEDINA — A 22-year-old township firefighter is set for arraignment this morning on charges he had sex with a 15-year-old Medina County teenager in January.

James Kuruc, of the 2900 block of Parnham Drive in Montville Township, is charged with two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, fourth-degree felonies punishable by up to 1½ years in prison each.

County sheriff’s Capt. Kenneth Baca said detectives began investigating in January or February, and Kuruc was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Houston while re-entering the country with his family.

Kuruc, who has since been extradited to Medina County, was on vacation with his family in Germany and customs agents found he had a warrant for his arrest after running his name through a database, Baca said.

Kuruc is a firefighter with the departments of Medina and Granger townships, Baca said. He declined to say more about the case because it is an ongoing matter.

Medina Township Fire Chief Mark Crumley said Kuruc had been with the department since 2012 and was on unpaid administrative leave.

“We need to wait until the outcome of the trial to go through any termination proceedings,” Crumley said.

Kuruc is free on $30,000 (10 percent) bond.
