Kaili Mitchell, 18, of Wadsworth, took first place in Western Horsemanship — ponies, in the all-ages division. Mitchell, a member of the Just Horsing Around 4-H Club competed with her mount, Snoopy, who competes under the name Award Ceremony. Mitchell said she was judged on the pattern of her entrance ride into the arena, her body position and her ability to maintain the same speed while at a jog and a lope. A lope is a relaxed jog used in Western riding. “You have to maintain the same speed while doing the lope and canter, that’s what the judges are looking for,” she said. (LOREN GENSON / GAZETTE)
