Young musicians got their first taste of fame during the annual Battle of the Bands at the Medina County Fair.
Winning the $500 prize for first place was the Joey Hughes Trio.
Second place, along with $200, went to Walking in Circles.
Th3 Royal Skam took third place and will receive $100.
A total of six local bands performed in 15 minute segments in the pavilion. The other three bands were Chase Johanson, Fist Face and Krankenwagon.
“This is great because there’s really not too many opportunities to play in front of people in Medina,” said Julian Quesada, Medina, who performed in two bands, Fist Face and Th3 Royal Skam.
Craig Chopak, assistant organizer for the competition and one of the judges, said the county fair’s Battle of the Bands is geared toward young musicians because many of them aren’t old enough to get into other venues in Medina that serve alcohol.
“Here they get a crowd, experience and then there’s a nice cash prize at the end for them,” Chopak said.
After the three finalists each performed another 15-minute set and Day Method, a Brunswick band, played for 45 minutes before the winners were announced.
“It’s great for bands that are starting out,” Ben Williams of Day Method said. “Playing in front of a live audience is always better than just practicing.”
