Traveling Sept. 11 memorial to Medina to spread ‘never forget’ message

A mobile 9/11 memorial will roll into Medina at the end of August for two days.

The 53-foot-long Tunnel to Towers tractor-trailer will make a stop in the city Aug. 26 and 27. It features an 1,100-square-foot interactive memorial to the firefighters and police officers who lost their lives trying to save people inside the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

“Coming along with the tour are New York City firefighters who were there on 9/11 and will speak to what they went through and give personal stories from that day,” said Mark Phillips, local organizer for the Stephen Siller Foundation.

Phillips said the memorial also will include artifacts on loan from the National September 11 Memorial Museum.

The memorial is on a nationwide tour in support of the Stephen Siller Foundation 5K runs and walks, which began to benefit and honor all who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks, such as firefighter Stephen Siller.

“Like a lot of other people, we are genuinely worried that the story of Sept. 11 isn’t being taught adequately in the schools,” Frank Siller, foundation founder said on TunnelToTowersMedina.org. “Part of our mission as an organization has always been to spread the message of, ‘Never forget.’ ”

The Tunnel to Towers memorial will be the first time since 2011, when a beam from the World Trade Center was put on display in Medina Township, that an artifact from 9/11 will be in Medina County.

The memorial will be set up in the parking lot at the corner of West Liberty Street and South Elmwood Avenue north of the Moose Lodge.

Medina also will be the site of a Stephen Siller 5K race. People who want to participate in the Sept. 14 race can register at www.t2trun.org.
