Missing him already are his daughters Jenny (Joe) Knap, Jill Matthews, Martha (Carl) Mathis, Amy (Kevin) Friday and Mary (Michael) Bodnar; grandchildren, Andrew (Lauren) and Chris Knap, Justin Matthews, Chris Mathis, Mara and Eric Friday, Dillon, Franchesca and Garrett Bodnar; his brother, Don (Sue) Matthews; brother-in-law, Don Postel and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was pre-deceased by his wife and soul mate, Betty; son, Mark and grandson, Uriah.

Richard was born May 29, 1926 in Gallipolis, Ohio. He grew up in Columbus, and joined the U.S. Navy immediately after his graduation from North High in 1944. He served as Seaman 1st Class from 1944-1946, during World War II.

In 1949 he graduated from the Ohio State University with a teaching degree, and met the love of his life there. He and Betty, married in 1951, celebrated 58 years together before her passing in 2010. Dick and Betty lived briefly in Toledo, then Akron, finally settling permanently in Medina in 1966.

Richard taught high school but spent most of his career as a dedicated English professor at Cuyahoga Community College from it’s inception in 1963 until his full retirement in 1989.

He will always be cherished for his zany sense of humor, amazing gift of knowledge and love of books, his enduring and steadfast faith in God and dedicated service to his church and community.

Above all, his greatest joy in life was to talk to and help others. He made friends with everyone he met and gave generously of his time and money to many organizations including Salvation Army and Hospice of Medina County, where he drove patients to appointments, and counseled them and their loved ones in their last days/hours. He was a lifelong blood donor and active member at his church.

Wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend and faithful servant to the Lord, he will be forever in our hearts.
