He was a U.S. Marine in WWII, served in both Theaters of Operation and was a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He graduated from East Tech High School as an honor student, (Scarabian Honor Society), Number One Athlete of the Year and was also on the YMCA traveling tumbling and gymnastic team. He served on the Cleveland Police Force and was employed as an Operating Engineer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer for 28 years. Arrel was also a part time school bus driver for the Brunswick School System for 25 years.
He loved hunting and fishing on Catawba Island, where he had a camper. He was a member of the Brunswick VFW Post 9520 and the American Legion Post 234. He belonged to the “Tin Can Sailors,” the Plain Dealer Pressman Group, was a member of the Honor Guard at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. He belonged to the Brunswick Recreation Center since 1991 (nearly 3000 daily visits); also their Fishing Club. He belonged to the Teamsters Local 473 Newspaper and Magazine Union. He will be remembered for his magnetic personality, his love of life, and his devout Catholic faith.
He was the beloved husband of Rosemary (nee Kuzilla) for 56 years; loving father of Lynn Mason Rieg, Daniel (Deborah) Mason, Karen Harvey-Mason, Diane Hart, Robert (Elizabeth) Mikol; grandfather of Derek and Chase Rieg, Drew and David Mason and Corky, Forrest and Xavier Mikol.
Friends may call Friday, August 29, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M., at Waite and Son Funeral Home, 3300 Center Rd., Brunswick. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, August 30, 2014 at St. Colette Catholic Church, 330 W. 130, Brunswick, at 10 A.M. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens, Brunswick.
