Hornets make history

Albert Grindle The Gazette BRUNSWICK — It kept running the ball and running down the clock, giving its defense opportunities to make sure time ran out on Avon’s season. The top-seeded Highland football team is still running after an edge-of-your seat 24-21 victory Friday in the Division II, Region 4 championship at cold and Read More…

Offensive line plays big role in win

Chad Grant The Gazette BRUNSWICK — Their names won’t show up in the box score, but the unheralded and often anonymous Highland offensive linemen came up big Friday. It would be hard to find a better performance than the one turned in by the six road graders in the Hornets’ 24-21 Division II, Region Read More…

High school football: Frederick holding own on O-line

Tyler Frederick smiles from ear to ear when asked about his nickname because he’s had no choice but to get used to it. Heck, he doesn’t even remember the last time a teammate called him “Tyler.” The story dates to the Highland two-way lineman’s elementary school days. Apparently showing no regard for Frederick’s feelings — Read More…

High school football: Undefeated Hornets are all business

BRUNSWICK — No one would blame the Highland football team if it had extra moxie after defeating Massillon 17-14 last week or if it played the revenge card after losing to Avon in the playoffs two years ago. The 12-0 Hornets don’t roll like that. They’ve remained grounded heading into tonight’s Division II, Region 4 Read More…

High school football: Bruce Kinsey D-II Offensive Player of Year

The resume spoke for itself: a perfect record, No. 6 rating in The Associated Press state poll, 2,472 yards total offense and 29 touchdowns in the regular season. Highland quarterback Bruce Kinsey was the unanimous choice for Division II Offensive Player of the Year when the All-Northeast Inland District teams were released Wednesday by the Read More…

High school football: Kinsey pipes up when needed, but prefers listening

The son of his youth football coach and still the younger brother of the quarterback, Coltin Kinsey has always gotten a lot of advice. It doesn’t happen very often, but every once in a while the talented Highland receiver/cornerback likes to get in his two cents worth. “He’ll say, ‘Bruce, if I do this, this Read More…

High school football: Undersized Zaz leaves everything on the field

The exact number fluctuates between 2,560 and 2,640, but Jonny Zaz squeezes every ounce out of his ability. Standing 5-foot-7¼ — and he wants that quarter inch! — the senior has had an outstanding season for the Highland football team despite weighing between 160 and 165 pounds, depending on the day. “I didn’t get very Read More…

The defense never rests

Dan Brown The Gazette AKRON — The Highland defense was not fazed by how big and strong Massillon was or all the hype that surrounded Friday night’s Division II, Region 4 semifinal. The Hornets were craftier, out-executed the touted Tigers and held on for a 17-14 victory at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium-Summa Read More…

Hornets beat Massillon

Albert Grindle The Gazette AKRON — The rowdy fans waving their orange towels, the Obie the Tiger decal on the side of the helmets and the tradition of Massillon football frequently intimidate opponents into submission. More than 7,650 in attendance at the University of Akron’s Infocision Stadium-Summa Field saw the opposite Friday in a Division Read More…
